Air-Frame Radio Range

Steam Packet Radio Wireless IP products (in common with ALL other wireless products) are subject to many variables when defining operational wireless ranges. This is especially true at longer ranges.

The following table should be used for planning purposes (actual ranges may be lower or higher depending on field conditions) using a variety of antennas:

Notes:

  1. All figures assume unobstructed Line of Sight (LoS) operation.

  2. Depending on a variety of circumstances antennas in this range may not be legal. You must be fully conversant with local regulations before proceeding. If you require further information please do not hesitate to contact us.

  3. Low Gain antennas are typically Omnidirectional, Medium and High Gain are typically Directional but reasonably priced omnidirectional antennas up to 12 dbi are readily available.

  4. Directional antennas come in many different types such as Yaggi, Panel and Grid. The actual antenna to use will be determined by a variety of parameters such as cost, prevailing weather conditions and aesthetics.

  5. Longer ranges (over 10Km) are subject to a number of additional variables especially Fresnel Effects which may require considerable antenna height (> 100 meters). Extreme caution should be exercised when designing long range connections.
